Hey, I'm just wanting to get out there and see what helmets our members wear. I'm wanting to find a skullcap type helmet but none of the DOT helmets seem to look right on me :( . I'm currently wearing an ICON Alliance Speedmetal Blue with blue tinted face shield.

Full face has saved me more than once. I went down once on the freeway at almost 70. The front and side were rashed up bad. I would have had severe facial damage without the full face helmet. Another time I was shot by some psycho from an overpass with a 22LR. The bullet hit the back and was deflected into the lining of my leather jacket. It probably would have taken off the back of my skull without the full coverage. Definitely no beanie helmet for me on a freeway. NonDOT will just get you a ticket in Cali.

Scorpion EXO-100 Spitfire Helmet. Wanted something cooler than a full face for the summer here in Florida. I try to stay off the highways and on the country roads. DOT approved.

Its a big helmet. So if you are a small guy you will get the Alien head effect, LOL. They run big, so I got a medium size for myself and its a perfect comfortable fit. Has the built in visor which retracts inside the shell when you don't need it.

Always Shoei, always full face. I live within sight of New Hampshire, one of the most die-hard, no helmet law states in the union and I just don't understand not wearing a helmet. It's the one piece of equipment (besides a well tuned and smooth functioning machine) that could save your life.

I am a staunch supporter of helmet laws and I give everyone who doesn't invest in a quality lid a big load of crap for it. Almost as bad as my rant against smoking but that's another story...

How many times do you hear about the guy in a bike accident that would have survived or wouldn't be brain dead if he had just been wearing a helmet? It's just like seat belts while in your four-wheeled conveyance: you always belt up so why not buy the best helmet you can afford?

And I REALLY don't get half-helmet "soup bowls". Just because they're legal doesn't mean it's a good idea. Besides, have you ever taken a big, fat june bug to the face at speed? Or how about that little stone kicked up by the car in front of you? I've had too many fast, hard objects deflected by my trusty Shoei to every use anything else. It's just not worth it.

HJC IS-16 full face. I like the built in sun visor. When it's hot and I'm going slow I leave the shield up for air.

One of our STAR Chapter members will be in ICU for another month because he took a 40mph spill without a helmet. Looks like he'll recover. Rehab will last about a year.

    MiCarl,

I got a chill reading your post. That's what I'm talking about. When I was a teenager, several friends and I came upon a motorcycle accident on a back road in the dead of night with two dead riders thrown from the bike, no helmets. Think that made an impression?

Makes me sad and mad at the same time. Sorry, guys, everyone has their little "thing" and helmets are one of my big crusades.

I love it and get complements all the time. Even though i almost always wear one I don't think people should be required to wear helmets, it should be their choice.

    Jesus! That is terrible!

I have had FF shoei, but my weird oval head now likes Arai better. I dug a 15 foot trench with my face when I had an untimely get off of my XR200 back when I was 14. I shudder to think what my face would have looked like if I did not have a full face on.

Shoei and always full faced. Saw a video of a guy wreck and roll onto a curb face first. Would have removed his lower jaw and probably killed him. He walked away. I dont understand people who ride with the fake Harley hemets. I rode in 100° plus weather in Missouri all last year. Id rather be a bit hot at times and have adequate protection if I wreck than wish I had it.

Great responses guys. I'm probably leaning towards painting my bike to make it match my ICON now :)

Hawk full face DOT/Snell approved. Has 5 vents, 3 front, 2 back and I don't ever get 'hot' head wearing it, even in 100degree heat.

Wrecked when I was 14 on a motorcross bike and hit a tree going close to 50mph WITH MY FOREHEAD. Luckily I was wearing a full-face then, but I still suffered a concussion. Wouldn't be here right now w/o that helmet.

Out of the 10 riders who died around here in the last 2 years, 7 weren't wearing helmets and 5 of those were not speed related. They would have been fine if they had worn a helmet.

Ever try running full speed into tree with your head?? You can't even run 20mph, so riding w/o one is STUPID!!

If I remember the Hurt report correctly, somewhere around 30% of all first impacts in a crash are on the rider's chin. Full face..every time.

I al so recall a column in Motor Cyclist from about 20 years ago, that recounted how a retired MX racer died while practicing on his farm. He had a lowside caused by slipping on a damp tree root at 5MPH; no helmet; died as soon as his head hit the dirt. I wish that I had saved that column.
