It has a windjammer, sissy bar, and luggage rack. Black with 12,000 miles. Guy wants $1950 but admits the price is high but says its because the bike is nice.
Got pics in my email, can't figure out how to get them here. Black paint looks shiny, engine is very clean but not perfect. Some light rust on head bolts, weathered carb boots, etc. Seat looks nice.
I got my 82 650 Maxim with 5800 miles for $500 but it did not run. What is a fair price for the 1100?

I would say if the bike needs little or nothing his selling price should be about 1500 - 1700. But beware of the problems that these bikes can have with 2nd gear transmissioin problems.

I would ask to see what all has been done, Fork seals, brake work, carb and tune work. Its tough to buy a bike in the middle of the winter with no chance of riding it to get a good feel how mechanicaly sound it is.

    Good Luck

    I agree; 1500-1700 max.

Because you have no hope of a test ride, be SURE you do a compression test. Contributing to my admonition would be all that touring stuff; even with that few miles the motor could be a bit thrashed. If nobody ever touched the valves it could be a lot thrashed.

Remember, mileage has nothing to do with AGE; I see people advertise bikes all the time who think "original tires, lots of tread left" is a selling point. Tires and brakes are both more age-susceptible, if not recently done then take that into consideration as well.

IMHO It depends on how much you want the bike. Everyone has a different opinion about each bike they look at. Some will pay more than others for the bike they really like/want.
It's just like a car. Some would pay 2 Grand for a '75 Gremlin. Others wouldn't give 50 bucks.

It also depends on how much time and money you're willing to invest in the bike. "IF" there is a problem.

I have owned a 650 Maxim and bought a "basket case" 82 1100 last winter. It was cheap but I put quite a bit into it to get it where it is today.Although I didn't know if it had the second gear problem, I bought it. I was willing to dedicate my time and money to find out.I wanted the bike anyway. Turns out I didn't have the 2nd gear problem. I already had a ton of hours and a few bucks in it just to ride it to find out. I would have invested more if I had the problem. I love the bike and I'm glad I invested the time and money I did.

The difference between the 2 bikes are like night and day. The power, the ride, everything. To me personally I would do whatever it takes to keep this bike on the road.

Would I spend 2 grand on a mint one?? If I had the money, the answer would be... YES!!

Again, it depends on how much YOU like/want the bike and how dedicated you are to keeping it on the road.

As far as the second gear problem...You might ride it the first season but half way through the problem develops. There is no time span or mileage that will determine when the problem shows up. NOT ALL of these bikes will have the problem. I've never had to fix mine, but I hear that it takes about a day and can be done without removing the engine.

I say if you really want it. DO your research. There are other forums for the 1100. Get others opinions. If you do end up investing in the bike, I don't think you would be sorry. But That's just my .02.

I paid 1400$ canadian for mine with 38k on it. I had to redo the tank and carbs. The carbs were my fault for running on reserve with a rusted tank. Sent the tank to a rad shop and voila needs a paint job now but all worth it. The trans is good and engine too.

Seems to me a couple grand is a good deal for an 1100 that old in good condition, especially with the extra accessories on it.Plus, since he himself said his asking price is a bit high,I take that to mean he'll definitely take less.I'd probly offer $1400 or $1500 to start with, and go from there
