What is a pulsar (pulser) assembly?

    Long time, no post.

I was recently able to get the bike out of storage, and it had trouble starting. Would crank strong, but not catch and muffler backfire with starter fluid. Unfortunately having little time, I took it into a shop.

Mechanic says that the bike has weak spark due to a bad pulsar assembly. What is it and does it have another name? I've called a few vintage parts suppliers, such as Old Bike Barn, for prices, but they don't even know what I'm talking about.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He might just be jumping to conclusions but he is most likely talking about your pickup assembly. It is located under the left side crank case cover. It uses magnetic pickups to send a current to the tci which then triggers the ignition coils which are connected to the spark plugs.

I doubt though that he went through the proper proceedure to diagnose this as the problem and that it could be any of the components in the ignition system. I also don't think your pickup coils would be giving you a "weak" spark.

A new pickup assembly if you can find one will cost a few hundred bucks, find a used one on ebay for around $40.

I say trying to diagnose it yourself before you lay out money for a part you might not need.

Do you have a multimeter and a manual? There is a proceedure for diagnosing ignition problems. Start by checking to see if you have spark at your plugs and let us know.

Me either. They either work or they don't.

Wardog12, nice to see you back. If you want a mechanic to look at it bring it to me (I opened a shop last year).

First though, change the spark plugs.

If you are going to throw money at it, you might as well support MiCarl. He knows our bikes and gives a rat about keeping them rolling.

Fully charge the battery and put in a set of brand new, GAP CONFIRMED spark plugs. Then see what you get.

If you do decide to take it somewhere, Carl would be the man, no question.
