what is the best way to give my 83 xj750 seca a tune up?

    i want to give my bike a tune up, but i dont really know here to begin. i know i deff dont want to take apart my quad carbs and clean them tho i know that that wouldhelp a lot. are there any other lower budget ways without getting extremely technical on the engine? thank you so much fellas!

    There's a rumor goin' round that you start with checking and adjusting the valves, followed by a compression test to determine if you have a sound motor. The fine-tuning proceedures depend on each CYL pulling the same, and running the same, and also depends on the mechanic (you) to understand the various proceedures.

    But, if you just want to "mess around" you could throw a half can of "SeaFoam" in the tank, wire brush and gap the plugs 0.027" and sync the carbs "as-is" then adjust the Pilot (idle jet) Screws individually/incrementally until EACH plug has the "brown bag" color.
    This is the shade tree approach and gives varied and unreliable results with XJ's :wink: .

    No rumor there Time, just good advice.
    Clean the bike well so you won't introduce any dirt into the various places you will open up.
    If you haven't checked your rear brake yet, get to it... right away.
    There are many steps that go into a successful tune up that I won't go into detail about it here. Get a manual and follow the tuneup schedule.
    And don't forget to include the valve clearances or you run the risk of issues during tuning that will drive you nuts!

    Nobody has a Magic Wand.
    The Work to Tune-up your Bike requires spinning wrenches and getting dirty.
    The BIG Question YOU need to answer is:

    WHO is going to do the necessary work needing to be done?

    The LEAST you can do is provide whoever will be doing the jobs with ALL the Information needed.
    GET a YAMAHA "Factory Workshop Manual".
    Once armed with that Information; you can determine a course of action.

    From the tone of your initial Post; I'd guess you will need help.

    Explore:
    Bike Clubs
    Technical High Schools
    Unemployment Office Bulletin Board
    Print "Flyers". Give to Canteen Truck Drivers.
    Put Ad in paper.
    Craigs List.

    Don't believe in the common myth of "motor magic", what one person can do another can, just learn how, equip yourself with the correct tools and follow the steps rigorously. Remember that engines follow the laws of physics and will behave in a predictable manner.

    Taking the step you have, asking for advice before you attack it, demonstrates the first necessary ingredient, curiosity. The second thing you need is the wisdom to heed the advice of those who have gone before, followed by diligence and patience. You'll be ok.
