taking apart my carbs currently (first time every disassembling a carb). I checked my service manual's diagram of the carbs but i didn't find any similar looking objects in the diagram[IMG]

it's called the pilot mixture screw. or more commonly known as the idle mixture screw. there is also a spring, washer and o-ring in there.

in the pic above, it looks like the spring and everything else is still in the hole. take a small wire and bend a hook on the end to fish them out.

I hope you payed attention to what holes the air jets under the diaphragm came out of. the service manuals have them labeled backwards. it is all documented here on the forum somewhere. that being said, if they have been apart before, it is entirely possible they were reinstalled wrong already.

It is often recommended that before you remove the idle mixture screw, to turn that screw in (counting the number of turns) until it bottoms out.
This will then give you a rough starting point after the rebuild.

Although from what I have read here and personally experienced on a XJ650 Maxim, is that starting off with 2.5 turns out is usually sufficient for vacuum syncing and then Colortune from there.

And yes, like cyclenoob said - pay attention to details!
    Take notes and digital pics.
    And go to Church. . . .

turns out after reading your reply that the spring and washer were in there, i can't seem to get the o ring out, I'm truly lacking tools, dry expensive. yeah i took pictures of everything and notes. i've read through most of the stickied threads before i took the carbs off.

I'm really bummed that the diagram doesn't show like half the jets. i feel like they should have done 2 or 3 pictures on the carbs from different angles.

To get the O ring out.. straighten a paper clip and make an L at one end probably only about 2mm will do and go fishing with it.

If you have the Haynes manual: pg. 126 has a diagram of the mix screw. Pg. 128 read "carburetor settings" and see pic of mix screw. As stumplifter mentioned 2.5 turns from soft bottom is a good start. Hope this help.
