Four questions about this part, found under the seat behind the battery.

    1) what is this called?
    2) what does it do?
    3) can it go bad?
    4) what is the correct wiring to it?

    Thanks.

    1.Starter solenoid.
2.Connects the starter to the battery when you hit the switch
    3. Yes, but if there's a problem it's more likely in the connections that the actual solenoid.
4.Heavy gauge wire from battery + to one of the big connections.
Heavy gauge wire from the other big connection to starter
Small gauge wire from starter relay to small connection on the edge
small gauge wire from other small connection to ground

On my bike the small gauge wires are soldered.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

Does it matter which of the big connectors the battery "+" goes to? or are they interchangeable?

Also, I only have one small-gauge wire going from it to the starter relay. I don't have it grounded. If I were to run a ground wire from the other small post, where should it go to for proper grounding?

    Yes they are interchangeable.

There should be a Blue/White wire that comes to the relay, that is from the start button. There should also be a Red/White wire that comes from Starter safety relay.
Power comes from the safety relay, through the starter solenoid, and is grounded by the start switch.
