What is this plug for, and do I need it?

This electrical plug coming out of my clutch came apart and the connector ripped out, should I worry about fixing it or is it just some kind of safety switch? Everything seems to work fine without it connected.

It's your clutch switch, and allows your bike to start in first gear with the clutch pulled in (unless you've disabled your safety circuits).

It sure is; and your failure is typical. If as mentioned above, you haven't disabled your safety circuit, I'd replace it. Being able to start the bike in gear comes in handy if you stall in traffic.

Have a look, the other end plugs in inside the headlight shell: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=30354.html
