I am having issues finding the specific size specs for the rear brake drums. I have bought two sets from two separate sites and they both say it fits the bike but are too small. Can anyone help. I have an 1982 XJ550 Maxim, I was told it was stock but who knows now… Thank you!

I had the same problem when buying from an ebay seller. He sent the wrong shoes for my '83 XJ550K Maxim. The seller did make it right, but I learned to buy from Chacal (XJ4ever) as he always gets the right part for the right bike.

I had the same issue myself. I ordered the brakes in the fall and went to put them on a few days ago... opened the package and swore up a storm. It all works out in the end though, because now I get to die in a fiery wreck just like my high school guidance councilor always said I would.

I'm guessing that the brakes for the seca are smaller than the maxim and thats why I thought I was getting a good deal on brakes? Or this company (I'm guessing is the same place, but I would have to look at my invoice which is in the garage) is just shipping the wrong parts to xj550 owners across the board?

Most sellers don't actually know what fits what; they just assume.
I've had people bring me brake shoes for their Maxims, only to end up buying the correct brake shoes for them, and keeping what they brought in for my Seca.
This is one of many reasons why that guy up there is who we like to buy our parts from.

Gotcha! Yep, bought the Seca shoes. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me three times… well, yea I definitely didn't pay enough attention. So I have plenty of Seca pads, that's for sure. I bought a set in the winter so I could change them now and after I found out they were wrong, I bought the wrong ones twice more. From different sellers who each said different crap. Oh well, at least the bike isn't road ready yet so I'm not in a huge rush.

Chacal, I will send you a message about purchases :)

    Thank you everyone!

Actually, it's worse than that; they just blindly follow what the manufacturer specifies. Many (most?) manufacturers list products to fit the "world" market, and since in the rest of the world, there is no 550 Maxim or 550 Seca, only an XJ550 model (which is, in the USA version, basically the Seca model), they list the application as "XJ550" which IS correct for everywhere except North America, which is really odd, since the North American marketplace was probably the largest (by a good deal) for these bikes.

I think it's a "worldview" type of thing; outside of North America --- at least in that era --- North America was NOT viewed as the "center of the universe", and thus they marketed and specified product applications according to their local point-of-view and applications. Once the parts started flowing into North America, no one took the time or effort to update their "worldview", or research and discover what particular differences exist in model (and thus part) applications.

The ebay seller I bought from knew right away what happened. Since I had specified Maxim on purchase order he sent shipping label to return Seca shoes when he overnighted Maxim shoes. Good service, but Chacal would have been correct first time.
