What size XJ do I have? Is it a 650 or 750?

    Hi guys,
My name is Joe and I normally drive a 1981 Yamaha Virago. I just recently acquired a Yamaha Maxim. It is a four cylinder and I pulled the carbs for a rebuild, but I don't know what size bike it is.

I think it is either a 1982 or 1983. On the handlebars, it says 10/82, so I think that means it is a 1983.

    I am not sure if it is a 650 or a 750.
The bike is a 4 cylinder with the YICS on the cylinder heads. On the side of the motor it says 2500cm3, but I know that it's not 2500cc's.

The first 7 of the VIN are JYA22R00.

Can you guys help me out? This is a pretty clean bike, but the carbs are all really gummy. Can anyone offer me any tips on de-gumming these? Where can I look for kits online? It looks like OldBikeBarn.com has the best prices at 16.95 per carb.

Any help on what size/model XJ I have would be really helpful. Thanks!

    -Joe

You could do what I did for a friend's bike. I went to progressive.com like if I was shopping for motorcycle insurance and one of the questions asks if u have the VIN for the vehicle. Just ewnter your VIN and Progressive will automatically display year and #CC's

Awesome, thanks, that worked. It's a 1983 Yamaha Maxim 750.

Can anyone suggest a good place to buy 4 carb kits as well as a throttle cable? Thanks!

You can score all of your parts from the shops listed in our links section. Carb kits are not terribly hard to come by and most shops offer a decent deal on 4 kits. I found a decent place in Canada that offered me parts and shipping at a good price from flea-bay. Shop around. The Haynes manuel is a great companion and will make any servicing much easier. The new CD should also be on your list too. Good luck Joe!
