I know it is not the best platform to start with but it is what I have. I am looking to convert my 83 maxim 650 into a cafe racer and need a new tank. I plan on making my own seat but need to start with the tank to know what I am working with. I have thought about just building a fiberglass shell over my stock tank to fake the look I want but would rather go with a real tank. I like the old flat track box tanks. does anyone know of tanks that will fit without heavy modification I dont have access to a welder.

here is a pic of the direction I want to go. Maybe I am dreaming but I think I can get there. Well at least with the gas tank.

The only other stock fuel tank I am aware of that will fit on an XJ650 is one from an XJ750. Other than that, you need to go talk to your local machine shop ...

The best bet would be to take the bike down to your local cycle salvage yard, and start test fitting tanks that you might like. This will give you an indication of what changes you will have to make to get the tank to fit properly.

The triple tube backbone on the XJ's can be a bit of a problem to work around, but there have been several alternative tanks used. For the styling that you are looking for I might suggest something like a 75-76 honda CB750F super sport tank.

When you get ready to go the spoked wheel route. read my writeup about using the 84 XV700 virago wheels. Link in my signature. It will give you all the info you need to convert to wire wheels.
