I've read somewhere on here that you can paint your cracked carb boots with some type of silicone sealant to keep them from (or stop them from) leaking air. Has anyone ever done this? what type of sealant, does it have to be high temp stuff?

High temp is best. Go to permatex's site and find what you need. www.permatex.com

I've heard tell that "Liquid Electrical Tape" is pretty good for this application.

I've seen someone use plain black silicone to coat the boot, then squeezed a bicycle inner tube over that and trim to fit -- seriously permanent fix.
