I own a 1982 XJ 650 Maxim with a drive shaft. Most of the people that marvel over my bike state "wow, a drive shaft". Just curious to find out when the drive shaft was put into production. Anyone...?

I know the late 70's triples had them, I believe the first year was '78 or '79, XS750's and XS850's. My friend's 1974 BMW is also shaftdrive, I'm not 100% sure, but I think all the BMW motorcycles were shaftdrive, and they go back a pretty long ways.

Thanks for the info! Looks like 1976 was first year for the "maintanance free" shaft drive.
