Research octane is not the same as what is labeled on the pump. 91 research is like 85 pump octane. Not sure why it calls for leaded, but it's not needed.

The valve seats are hardened. It says leaded because leaded was still common; and the bike has no catalytic converter, so it can run with lead. The fuel specs given are a minimum standard based (in part) on EPA compliance. If emissions testing for motorcycles had ever been enforced that information would guide the testing station so they know what the gasses coming out of the tailpipe should look like.
