A listing says 'needs new ignitor and four wire electrical diode' for a 1985 Maxim X 750. Is the ignitor difficult to find? What do you suppose she means by 'electrical diode?'

    Thanks all,

    Apato

I believe the diode is actually a series of diodes - check an appropriate wiring diagram. There is a possibility they mean a rectifier/ regulator - but this is less likely. Ask for more details.

The ignitor is probably a TCI ignition module. There are aftermarket solutions and some posts here on TCI repairs BUT a GENUINE YAMAHA TCI could be expensive. The list price for my bike (FJ600) is $800 US!!!!!!

There have been a number of these parted out lately and quite a few parts on E-bay.
Not real hard to find....BUT the big question is WHY are those parts bad and how does the owner know for sure.

I would suggest caution and don't pay a lot. If possible, do a compression check to make sure those aren't the only problems.

Dually noted. I'll bring my compression tester along.

She says it was checked by a professional mechanic who traced it back to the ignitor. It's a Canadian Maxim X, so that's a 750. Anyone have an ignitor kicking around with these numbers?

    TID 14-47 1 FL-10

Is there any way to substitute a different ignitor? I imagine there isn't.

What do these numbers mean anyways? The closest I can find is 14-44 1 FG10

The ignition timing and advance/retard are controlled electronically, so one that does not have the same number as your bike will probably run but not have the ideal settings in it.

There is a guy in New Zealand selling aftermarket TCI units for about $100 I think on ebay.

tci=ignitor=black box=brain box. I'll bet anything that the regulator rectifier fried and it took the stator with it, or vice versa. Mike, I believe has experienced this, I KNOW I have. If she doesn't run, cut the asking price in half unless she is complete, and in nice shape...unless of course he's asking like 300, then just beat him up for 1/3 of the price

I have two spare TCI, rectifiers, and one stator.
    My TCI is a TID14-35
    1AA-10-501

It's too cold in the garage to pull the TCI off Plum and see what number it is.

I would imagine that Len (Chacal) has the scoop on the number code.

After a tiny bit of research, it looks like the TID14-44 was for the airhead, but someone else would need to confirm.

I'm pretty sure that's the one I'm looking for. It's a burgundy 750 Maxim x from Canada. Do you have one of those, Len?

You must be looking at the bike for sale on Kijiji in Calgary. Looks to be in nice shape minus the whole not running thing. Got a watch on that ad myself.

Nope, no help on one of those puppies. Used on 750-X models, only, must be rare as hen's teeth. If anyone figures out what color the label is, please let me know so I can update my database!

How much is the bike? Rare bike, and given that the 700-X models are pretty darned zippy, I can imagine the 750-X being a real "hang-on!" ride......

Yea, I think it's a nice bike. Again, minus the not running thing. Is there an easy way to test the ignitor to see if that's indeed what's wrong with it?

Haha. Hi Jeff, let's arrange a Calgary carb clinic some day, eh?

Greetings. Hmmmm, I do still have that second 1984 XJ750RL to get running for myself. Gave the nice one to my Ex because she was bugging me to get her a bike so she could get her license and now the thing is sitting in my shed tormenting me. She won't even insure it so I can take it for a spin once in awhile. Did slap a plate on and took it for a test drive last summer. My Ninja is fun but the XJ is a more comfortable bike to ride. So I have decided to get the other one going for myself. Needs a lot of work though, carbs being one of them.
