Sorry for one of these threads but its got me curious what this machine could actually go for not based on book but on real sales. and your opinions I would think should be reliable.

    the basics

    1982 xj750 32xxx miles

Everything works as it should. All controls, all functions. all the electrical. including lights, instruments, safety cutoff circuits, flasher cancel. the whole nine.

Things I have done to it maintenance wise:

    cables are new
    lubed cables

    rebuilt master cylinder
    rebuilt both brake calipers
    new brake fluid, bleed lines.
new 3 piece braided stainless brake lines, in black
    cleaned the fluid level sensor.
sight glass is clean in the master too
    new brake pads
    new break shoes

    New fork seals
forks taken fully apart cleaned in ultrasonic
    new fork oil
    forks hold air

    new levers in black

    new air filter

    carbs taken fully apart
    ultra sonically clean
reassembled (no new parts I didn't see the need)
    synced via vacuum and yics
    mixture set via vacuum
    runs lovely

oil change and filter (duh) I drained that back bolt in the trans too
new oil in the rear diff

using the resistor method the battery level sensor is now a low voltage sensor for use with sealed battery

the lacquer was peeling on all the shinny bits. stripped that off with a bench buff wheel and various stages of jewelers rouge. it really shins up well

    new clutch fiber plates
    new EBC clutch springs

rebuilt starter motor (was spinning slow)

switched the fuse block to blade style. cleaned up the wiring running some new lines, (color matched and soldered and heat shrinked)

It has a rooster fairing. still have the rooster FM radio and paper speakers but they were ruff. swapped out for a cheap MP3/AM/FM deck and polypropylene speakers. sounds very nice at highway speeds not enough umph for interstate noise. the factory windshield was cracked, I still have it. but I made a new one for it.

    also has a throttle lock

took apart the gauge cluster to fix that dragging tach needle. new gauge bulbs in while I was in there, and tested.

valves were checked and shims installed where appropriate none were at 0 lash or too far out.
compression checked low side of spec but within spec and within 6+/- across
New valve cover because the old leaked. no leaks now anywhere.

took the switches apart to clean up the contacts and movements. also had to take apart the fuel level sender for service. that works now as it should

New wheel bearings and seals front and back.
new steering head bearings, and adjusted properly.

has engine guards and highway pegs (just the 2 point mount style)

new tires, just some shinko 230s (they have 1100miles on them now, a couple weeks old)

I think that about covers it, sorry for a long read.

the only bad I can think of is my boots have been repaired, using the bicycle tube method. cyl 1 was cracked through when I got the bike this spring. 2-4 surface cracks, I repaired all 4. now I didn't do a leak down, but compression is good. so I decided not to fret too much about cyl 1. and it runs so nice.

not sure if I want to commit to new ones, hoping to find good used in the future. the repair doesn't bother me, but it might catch a buyers eye.

It starts very well and you can just go, (with partial choke of course) but it likes to run. doesn't have any hiccups or temper that I have seen.

since getting it I have put on about 2k miles. 2 weeks ago my dad and I went on a little tour of MN, and did 1100 miles over the weekend. it never missed a beat and was just a joy to ride the highways with, comfy and the radio is sweet. got an easy 54mpg all day. just easy cruising. put the tires on right before we left. and was really happy with the shinkos

recently I got the matching trunk and luggage rack for it. has some scratches in it. not as nice of paint as the bike has. maybe repaint if I ever find matching bags.

the pics I have are kinda scattered through the build

like here you can see most of the mechanical done and cleaned up. not shown is the brake upgrades, tires and trunk

the only pic I have showing the trunk. shows the brake lines but not the new tires. not good detail on the trunk but it is scratched, with a deep one on either side about 2in long. I already power buffed out what I could and shined it up as best I could. rebuilt the lock. cleaned the chrome rack and new straps inside. bike was dirty. truthfully I don't usually put in the effort to keep the shinny bits too brite. its something I just ride.

nothing is perfect and most of the bike is still 1982 so it has wear and tear and such but I would ride it cross country and intend to do that in august. im sure there are nicer ones, but I have to believe that when I say all maintenance done/current. it means a bit more than the average craigslist add, that means they might have changed the oil and checked the tire pressures.

the bike wasn't bad off when I bought it. totally rideable but most this I did because it was just old and well I enjoy working on things and was short a project

    thanks for your time!

You have a nice clean looking bike there! As far as value $1200 to 1800 depending on your area. If you can find the right buyer you might get $2200 but that might be pushing it. Most people looking at older bikes are looking for cheep fixer-uppers. The right buyer would be someone that had an XJ back in the day and wants one again with out having to rebuild it. I think you already know you will never get out of it what you put into it (except in riding pleasure)

thank you for the compliments and your opinions.

what to do what to do though?

for the record I do have another bike, a heavily modified 1996 yzf600. (sport bike)

not the most modern but I have taken it about as far as it can go, without stroking it or forced induction, with brakes and suspension to go with it.

I am not selling that. too much of me in that. though I admit I don't ride it as much any more and haven't done a track day in ages.

the xj is just a joy to ride. that's how I describe it. I have ridden distance with the yzf but you arrived a bit beat up at your destination. and its not nearly as hard a ride as a modern sport.

the xj I perused wanting an inexpensive machine with all the features the xj has. I picked that one up for 1k. I suppose I am close to 1500 into it with everything bought. my labor is free. time wise idk I never count that.

but it is nice to know that, in theory at least. I wouldn't take a loss on it if I do decide to sell.

I think it is a machine of good value. I am always hunting a few bikes. if those come up it may have to go for funds and space for another bike.
currently I commute to work on it, so I guess it will stick around a bit. as the season goes on values drop up here. getting close the tipping point. spring is the high dollar time.
