Whats the best way to bypass the headlight relay? My relay has died and $70 from Yamaha seems a bit much to me.

Get a standard relay from an electronics shop for about $5 and use it instead. Get a 30 amp unit and you'll be golden. Good luck and let us know if you have further questions.
(Reference the XJ650RJ wiring diagram in the Haynes manual)

Ok....I got the 30A relay....now what? lol The new relays 4 contacts are: 12V in, 12V out, On/off switch, Ground. The wiring in the bike has a white, black, blue/black, red/yellow. I tried a couple of positions and no luck. I know the black is ground....

How did you identify that as the Headlight relay?

Turn signal relay and headlight relay are not interchangeable.

Headlight relay has four wires going to it. Colors are White, Black, Blue/Black and Red/Yellow. (Turn signal relay has three wires).

You can bypass the relay (light on with key on) by connecting the Blue/Black wire to the Red/Yellow wire.

Bypassing that relay is a sure-fire battery killer.
