I have a white and red striped wire coming from the wire loom near the battery and it has another wire connected to it from the PO. It is not connected to anything from there. Any ideas where it goes?

Could be a battery sensor bypass to keep the computer from triggering the BATT warning. This should give you an idea of what's up:

Just attach it to the positive side of the battery and the light will go out. I just had the same issue with a 1983 GS100.

Actually don't do that if you have an XJ with the systems monitor computer. A direct connection of that lead to the battery will result in an over-voltage condition that will damage the monitoring system.

    OP:

Click the link for the bypass kit. You can get the parts locally if you are comfortable doing the soldering work yourself. Otherwise the kit is a good buy. Once installed the battery light will come on if the battery voltage drops too low.

You say dont directly attach it yet that is exactly what the directions for the bypass kit say.

The bypass kit includes a resistor to drop the voltage down, as well as connectors so you don't have to do any soldering (if you so choose).

Mines straight to battery + no probs, been there about 4 years. Read it here first and others hadn't had a problem.
