    Ah the joys of having a bike that nobody makes any manuals for. Anybody know where the flasher relay is on an 1982 Maxim 400 (XS400J)?

    Use this site: Yamaha Part

    The site lets you access the micro fiche diagrams for nearly any Yamaha bike. Should help a lot when trying to locate those hare to find flasher units. :D

    Just an FYI, you may have an 83, not an 82. The Maxim officially came out in 83 but your bike may have been manufactured in 82 for the 83 year model. Otherwise your bike is a 1982 XS400 Special.

    It says Maxim on the sidecovers and the title says it's an '82.

    The title can easily be wrong. Use the VIN to figure out what kind of bike it is.

    If that is accurate, what is my bike then? It is an XJ650G. I thought it was a Maxim. In fact it used to have some kind of side plate decals on it but I never saw them intact. Sure looks like a Maxim though.. This much I know, it's dead sexy.

    Checking the VIN is the only way to know for sure.

    It is mounted in the frame between the coils under the fuel tank.

    Also, there were XJ bikes prior to 1983, it was the 'Maxim'; moniker that was added in 83 if I understand correctly. I could be wrong though as my wife as informed me many times that I am!! ;-)

    XS400J = 1982 Maxim
    XS400RJ = 1982 Seca
    XS400K = 1983 Maxim
    XS400RK = 1983 Seca

    There ya go! :)

    And yes, the Maxims started appearing in 1980 (perhaps even 1978, though I haven't done a thorough check). For example, an XJ650G is a 1980 XJ650 Maxim. An XJ650H is the 1981 model, and the XJ650J is the 1982 model, etc. The two-letter models are typically the Secas.

    Mine are all Maxims. Checking the VIN is the best way to tell for sure, though, as flash did, since titles are often written up based on what some PO *thinks* it is. Just because a manual was taken out of a drawer and taped to the bike doesn't mean it belongs to that bike (as I found out).

    And by the way, if your title DOESN'T match, there are legal ways to get it cleaned up (at least, there are in Missouri), that aren't *too* painful, and prevent some self-righteous bureaucratic $^!*-tard from making you out to be a criminal later...

    I found a section on the XJCD that is titled "Yamaha Model ID Codes" and your "12R" is listed as a XS400J
    J is for the 1982 model year

    According to the parts fiche the XS400J has a Maxim badge on the side cover.

    You have got to be kidding me!

    I found where the relay is. Underneath the gas tank, inside the frame somewhere. How the hell am I supposed to get up in there without taking the whole effing bike apart?

    On my 83 400, I had to remove my tank, the bracket on the left side of the engine, then take off all the zip ties that held the wiring harness in place just to get some slack. I finally managed to reach up inside and unplug the unit. After I plugged in the new flasher and put just inside so I could get at it more easily next time.

    Thought I might have to take that bracket off. Would have last night, but the engine was still hot. I'll give it a whirl this weekend when I have time. Thanks, Mac.

    I've fiddled with mine enough that I can get it on and off by just reaching underneath, but the first time it's far easier to remove the tank at least. I pulled the horn as well (not really necessary).
