ok this is my idea let me know what you think. could it work????

i am thinking about using a honda shadow or vtx rear wheel, drive unit, and drive shaft in order to not only have a wider tire but also stretching the swing arm.

now i know i might have to make an adapter for the driveshaft and i am hoping that the extra length and the fact that i will leave the inside of the driveshaft open

Example: not a great one tho lol

and if i can do this i would also like to make it a top mount mono shock.

if any one has any ideas or thoughts on this please let me know this will most likely be a winter project

    Thanks

I believe you can dent / cut out the drive shaft housing in order to fit a larger tire. It is dry in there as far as I know.
My 130 is as big as possible on my bike... had to be aired down and squeezed on.

I'm not sure but it might be the VTX that is swappable... I have the link bookmarked on my home computer but unfortunately I'm on a laptop and travelling right now... I always fantasized about swapping the rear end from a V-Max myself.

doesn't the rear swing arm on the virago have a bigger tyre and still retain the shaft drive as well as a mono shock set up ???? just a thought

the early viragos (81-83) had the same tire and rimas the maxim, and the shaft drive/swingarm ass'y, but the mono-shock and rear cage assembly. The later ones have the shaft-drive and swingarm as usual, the the tires are wider, the rim is different, the swingarm is wider (I believe) and they have dual shocks. It wouldn't suprise me if the 85 and up xv rear could be made to work with mods to either the xv parts or the xj frame, or both. Especially cosidering that the xj700 is kind of a cross between the two. Sort of like an XJ front half of a frame and the xv back half of a frame. THey are quite similar in many ways ( and very different in many ways, too. I ride an 83 xj650, am building an xv from scratch, and have several other xj's and xv'x in various stages of repair, repo, or retirement.

Ah-HA!! At long last! I've been thinking on trying to see if a '84+ Virago swingarm would fit on a Maxim for a long time now. Thing is, I don't have access to a XV swingarm to try.

So Dave... If you have a chance, can you compare the two side-by-side? :)

I'll see what I can do tomorrow. I'll only be able to do some close comparing cuz they're all on bikes. BUT, I'll see what I can measure and write down for you.
