I've been meaning to get around to fitting a very good full touring fairing for the last two years, but you know how things go. In the meantime, faced with another winter on this bike I decided to do a couple of things to improve the standard fittings.
First I fitted a pair of hand guards, just cheap Hong Kong Specials, but they're surprisingly robust and seem to do the job. Only had them on a week, and the weather's not been very cold so far but they do make a difference.
Today I set to with a handsaw and a length of polycarbonate sheet about 11" wide and 2mm thick. Just cut a 16" section from it and formed that over the existing screen, using the top four bolts as securing points. It projects about 4 or 5 inches above the existing edge and should be enough to deflect the wind over the top of my helmet.
I'll fit some edge trim when I get some - tidy it up slightly and edge trim also helps tame the airflow off the edge of the screen, reducing buffeting, if any. If necessary, I can also fit another deflector at the top, a laminar lip type of thing, now available cheaply from aliexpress for about $18.
    Excuse the crappy pic...

And this is the view from the hot seat.

Just got to make sure the screen edge isn't going to cut my head off in the event of a shunt, if that's a problem I can have at it with a hot air gun and attempt to flare it up slightly. I haven't done that yet, as I'm reluctant to probably wreck my screen if I don't need to. I won't be out on the bike until Thursday, so I'll see what it's like then.

If you get an buffeting,. add some kind of space between the original windscreen and the add-on. That will allow a small amount of air to flow in which will reduce helmet buffeting.

Yes, it will be easy now to use the extension as a template and make it an inch longer so it curves above the OE screen, leaving a gap. I'll see how it goes tomorrow, as it's a work in progress.

Is it affecting the handling of the bike is any way? I might do this to my XJ looks like a good modification.

First day trial of the hand guards and extended windscreen on the XJ9. A qualified success, certainly on the hands, and the screen definitely fires the main airstream over my head, but there's still a fair amount of turbulence behind it. I strongly suspect the mirror heads, but I'll first try a diy deflector and /or air entry at the base. It will be creating a partial vacuum behind it, which is sucking in the turbulent air from the wake of the mirror heads and that's hitting my helmet.
The turbulence isn't strong enough to cause me any physical discomfort, it's just a bit noisy. No head shaking at all.

At 90mph it's definitely much more tolerable in the chill (6degC ambient) than before.

No handling issues to report, at all, as yet. I will eventually find out if it's going to go into a death wobble, but I'll leave that for later.

I think I will modify my fairing and hopefully not find the death wobble and I hope you don't either lol. Had enough of a wobble when the bars started oscillating due to a badly fitted tyre.

Solving the turbulence means either blocking even more air, increasing the size of the "pocket" behind the windscreen, or strategically allowing some air in, to fill that pocket.

Lowers will block more air. Devices like that shared by k-moe let a strategic amount of air in. So will my earlier suggestion of spacing the extension from the original windscreen; this will simulate a sport/ADV bike:
