WOAH! Starter motor lead wire loose!

hello. im new and just bought a great running xj650. i did noticed the solenoid swith has a loose cable attached to it. on the two posts (on the solenoid) one goes to the batt. one goes to the ...?

the other end of that (i assume its the starter motor lead cable) is just sitting loose! Where do i mount it?

correct me and help me get that thing mounted in the proper place?

1980 yamaha xj650. big black solenoid post cable unhooked! where does it go i just found it like this after i ride...

 

its connected to the solenoid and the other end it just sitting on the crank case . no connected to anything!

 

There are two wires coming off the two big posts on the solenoid. One does go to the battery "+" terminal; the other goes to the starter.

How did you manage to start the bike with it unhooked?

no manual, i jump it to start. was like this when i bought it about a week ago now. just a few steps, into 1st, pop the clutch... boom.

can you please tell me or show me where exactly it hooks in to the starter? and where the starter on this thing is...

hell im so bothered by this, ill give my phone number to anyone willing to tell me where the mount site is... i've looked all over the place and cannot find it. and i cant find any examples online...

 

I saw several diagram showing that it does in fact go to the starter motor... but i cannot visually locate this site on my '80 model... GGGRRRAAAAAAGGHGHH! haha. what weird problem.

 

oh man, i see my starter... theres a hole in it? i guess thats where the cable used to go? where is the bolt and nut that mounts it?

can i just put one in there and mount it? i looked inside and saw NO indication that the wire actually travels INSIDE the starter, just seems the cable mounts on an exterior nut...

now that we know theres not a mounting nut present... what can i do?

thats what im missing that bolt and nut mount, its just an empty hole in its place, just wanted to give a visual. can i fit another one in there?

 

Ahh, sounds like your brush plate maybe missing :? there should be a plate inside the motor with 2 carbon brushes, one grounded to the motor body & the other connected to that bolt (really a stud, which is insulated from the body by a plastic bushing)

Really you need to remove your starter (only 2 bolts sticking upwards at the end with the hole) and dismantle it (the 2 bolts that run the length of the motor) and see what your bike's P/O did to you...

 

ok... i looked inside earlier, but i dont really know what im looking at here...

 

lol... there is not length bolts... just the two vertical moutning bolts... wow

 

What so when you remove the motor the end caps just pull off? :? Sounds like somebody did a number on it already! There's probably a good starter for sale in the sell/swap/trade area of the forums...

Can you post up a photograph of your starter please?

 

ok. so i took it out and looked inside... no plate
no nothing... it looks like im gonna have to buy a new one... or agood used one. recommendations? (this is WEIRD, why would someone take the plate and brushes and post out??

I edited my post above, should be able to find a good used motor on here if yours is too badly hacked.

ill have to go back out there to the garage and remove it again. just put it back untill i find my replacement. ill post pics today

Cant really see too much with it on the bike, but I can see one of the holes for the missing bolts that should hold the motor together...

Perhaps if a replacement motor isn't immediately available you could get the parts from chacal to fix this one, but it depends how much damage the P/O has done in there. It's possible he found a dead armature or broken magnet & just threw the case together (or murdered them himself lol).

If you pull the motor back off sometime, strip it down and lay the parts out in order, then post a picture of them all we should be able to at least decide if it's worth testing the armature...

 

man, honestly im not feelin the rebuild/fix. I know it needs replacement. if you look carefully you can see the empty hole where the post was. right next to that rubber hose.
