Maybe it's just an old air cooled bike thing, but my '82 XJ1100J doesn't like to idle until it has been warmed up for quite some time (while idling high with the choke on). By some time I mean probably a good five minutes or so when it is cold (35-50 degrees). Once it gets warm enough it purrs like a kitten. It idles and runs very smooth with no problems.
I've adjusted the valves and gone though the carbs completely....and like I mentioned above, after warming up it idles perfectly....but it seems like it takes quite a while to reach that point....and it basically dies unless I have the choke on until it gets warm enough to idle.
Of course this is better in warmer weather...but a long lunch on a days ride will almost always still require some choke to start and a minute or two to warm back up again.
    Any thoughts??

most bikes take more time to warm up in the cold. Just got to remember to crank it up a few min before leaving

yeah, mikeames, that is the norm.
About 5 minutes running choked at about 2k does it for me.

I think you'd have a problem if it started right up in the cold without any choke ;) Then you know you're runnin' astronomically rich.

Alright, sounds like I have a consensus....these bikes are cold blooded and take a while to warm up.

    Thanks guys!

all engines are cold blooded. it's been that way since the beginning of time. they've always required a choke to fire them up.

in the old days. you had to pump the gas pedal a couple of times in your car. this did two things. first, it primed the carb and engine with extra gas. second, it allowed the choke to close.

when the choke mechanisms wore out. people were known to wire the chokes fully open. thus, more pumps of the gas pedal was required to fire the engine up. and pumpiong of the gas pedal was required to keep the engine running untill it warmed up enough to run on it's own.

todays cars are computer controlled and no longer require the gas pedal to fire them up. the computer does everything for you. it controls the amount of gas being injected into the engine by way of sensors that tell the computer how warm the engine is.

automotive schools once taught that the freezing point of a carburetor was 70 degrees.

Anything that has a carb on it is going to take at least 5 minutes to warm up. I think snowwy66 is talking about the rare YAMASAURUS.
