So, I just picked up this 82 XJ11. It's in pretty good shape. It starts right up, and seems to run smooth at throttle, but wont idle at all(unless you leave the choke cracked open). The bike as been sitting for a year, and judging by the crap I cleand out the the master cylinder reservoir, I bet the carbs have never been cleaned. The carb boots are cracked pretty good, so I thought I'd start there. I've ordered a set from HardParts. What else should I look for? I don't know if I'm up for tearing the carbs apart, so should I plan on taking in in to the shop to have the carbs cleaned and synced?

This is my first Yamaha, and I'm stoked to ride it. As soon as I heard it rev it reminded my of the sound of my brothers '73 z1. Love that sound.

    TIA

Once you replace your carb boots it will probablly idle just fine. I would deffinatly take it in and get the carbs cleaned though becuase 99% of the time if they have been sitting they will be all gummed up. Also check your crank case for gas. These bike tend to dump fuel into the crank case if you have to leave your choke on for long periods of time. Put iridium plugs in it as well. If you do these small things you can bet the farm your bike will run great.
