I purchased a 82 xj750 and it was complete minus the airbox. The engine is running good, but lean (plugs are whitish on the tips, and no tanning on the insulator) I know this is due to no air box. I have looked high and low for an air box, even ebay, but nothing there. What I have found is not complete. So...

Instead of going the PODS route, and not wanting to mess with rejetting, would making my own single filter air box work? If built an air box from steel of roughly the same dimensions and made up silcone boots to connect to the carbs, would this work? I could either make one using a cartridge filter or could use a single "pod" type filter. I actually have about 1/2 of the air box (the side that connects to the carbs) so fabricating up the other half wouldn't be a real challenge. Thanks!

I'd do it out of aluminum if possible but as long as you have the inlet opening roughly the same size as stock and roughly the same volume you will be fine. You should be ablt to get the rubber boots still that go from the carbs to the air box with those you will have the proper size. Or you could put on some furnco(rubber pvc connectors) from the carbs to your box. as long as you restric the air to near the proper amount you will be ok. Have you cleaned the carbs at all? lean can also be partially plugged jets or passages in the carbs.

    As mentioned ....

The Key is going to be the Airbox Inlet Opening. You will need to have the same area in order to limit the Cubic Feet per Minute of Air through the Box.

I'm surprised you can't find a used one.
It seems like every week one or two Members decide to abandon the Stock Airbox for Individual Pod Filters.

You should go to the Forums and start a Airbox Wanded Thread and see if you get a bite.

Thanks for the reply's. I saw those two auctions on ebay, but, both of them are missing the top cover....isn't the top cover what is regulating air flow?

As for the carbs. No I haven't taken them apart and cleaned them. Im a bit nervous to dig into them since I don't have a book or guide to go by. Im afraid to take them apart and then have them not work :( Is there anything on this site that shows the carbs, and what exactly I am looking at, as well as a walk through on cleaning them?
