i did some of that a long long time ago. it seemed inconsistent, large parts didn't wrinkle like small parts and it didn't like gas at all.
it's probably better by now though

An Unpainted Engine runs cooler than the same Engine painted.

Same thing goes for highly polished engines from what I hear. The natural casting creates a rougher surface therefore aiding with cooling as oppossed to highly polished that slips through the air. IIRC?

I always heard that painted motors dissipated heat better. If not, then all those smart Yamaha engineers really screwed up painting their engines from 85 til the present. LOL

you can get your large parts to wrinkle uniformly but it takes an oven about 200 degrees but don't cook to long. paint will chip if surface is not prepped correctly. And boy does it stink while cooking.

Maybe they don't need to dissipate heat rapidly. Most Yamaha fours since '85 have been water-cooled.

That being said, Yamaha sold (and still sells) the aircooled bikes with both painted and "natural" motors. I don't think it really makes enough of a difference to matter on a street bike.

In regard to wrinkle paint; every time I've seen it on a bike engine it chips pretty extensively when you remove cover screws for maintenance, and doesn't stay looking good for long.

I agree with you Fitz, I don't think it makes enough difference to matter. All the bike manufacturers have an equal amount of painted and non-painted motors air cooled and water cooled alike.(Except Off road)
Back when I rebuilt alternators, the consensuses was that painted or chromed housing would retain heat and damage the electrical components. I never saw evidence of that to confirm that opinion. Painted or chromed housing alternators lasted just as long as the natural finished ones.
