Hello all, i'm please to say (well at the moment i am) that i've just bought a XJ650 turbo from my friend ebay. I go to collect it tonight.

Its a non-runner (urrgh) and I got it cheap - so im not expecting too much. I've had a few bikes GSXR750, Z440, XL250, XT600 GL1100 and a XS750 so i'm ok with ripping stuff apart (just the putting it back together i have a problem with).

The bikes been dry stored (well so im told) since 96, so i am looking for some advice on how to start, i guess the usual clean everything petrol related and oil in the bores - replace the oil and filter - but is there anything else i should be doing too...

Well here's to another voyage of discovery... always wanted a turbo too!

Welcome from VA!! I'm am not too familiar with the turbos but I would definately look at your brakes both front and rear. As cheap as they are to replace go ahead and give yourself peace of mind and replace them since it has been since 96. Good Luck and welcome again.

I've got it - its a 82 in red it needs alot of love, but apparently it has some interesting history, not not sure how accurate this is but the previous owner to the chap i bought it off won the bike and it belonged to 'The combe Martin Motorsycle Collection' not sure if this makes it special or not... but its mine now and its in need of some TLC.

Things i noticed are that there is no right hand exhaust (the one that connects directly to the turbo) and that its had some bad paintjob sometime in its life, also looks like there is a crack in the clutch casing

If its a red warning light flashing on the dash, its most likely just the battery sensor warning light, there's a sensor that screws into the battery and it monitors acid level...Every Seca I've seen is either missing the sensor or its damaged setting off the light...

Incidently, welcome from another Turbo owner! I have a '83 model that was my first streetbike back in 95, I gave it to my best friend in 99 and I've recently gotten it back from him and I'm restoring it...

Welcome to the forum!! Always good to see another turbo owner.

I can hook you up. PM me with a email addy and I'll send you the turbo supplement as well as the base model service manual

Ryan(above) and I are about the only two active "turbo guys" here right now. It sounds like you are going to be just fine with this bike.

Once you get the manual, you'll know what's involved. As far as the flashing red light....push the top button twice to turn it off.

What I did which isn't to say is the best way, was to strip the bike down by 1st removing the carbs and plugging the adapters(do NOT remove the rubber boots from the engine, the bolts will break) & remove the oil and the oil cooler, the gas tank of course, the left/right exh pipes, the header pipes leaving the turbo only in place. Once you have everything removed, you can clean the dirt, grease, crud out of every nook and cranny......then it'll be time to make some decisions as far as rebuilding your carbs, turbo, etc

I took it to nearly the frame, rebuilding, cleaning, painting as I went along.....got it completed then ran into a stator issue and coil issue at about the same time a few months later, resolved those then came clutch plates (I run 18PSI)....now it's all good again....and a BLAST to ride!!

Welcome from Suffolk! My first bike was an AP50 to! I would want it back - because it would be worth 4 times what I paid for it in 1979!!! (maybe even 6 times)

The AP50 was fun.. got mine up to 50mph once - then it seized the piston and sent me down the road.. I think i only paid £90 for it back then...

I've started my restoration thread so i'll be updating this whist fitting it between doing my Celica GT4, GL1100 and the other mountain of stuff that comes with having a young family..

I had 55 out of mine down a hill. I paid 255 for it in 1979. It siezed as well racing an SS50 on a dual carriageway at night. As the engine ground to a halt the lights went out as they were coil powered!

I let it cool down and it restarted and got me home. My "mate" never stopped!

Open a "gallery" and keep us updated with how it's going.
