I just bought an 82 xj750 and I noticed an air valve and a couple dials numbered to 4 on top of my forks. This is my first bike and I was just wondering how to adjust this setup for the best ride?

The Air Valve is there to put some LIGHT Air Pressure into the Front Forks.
You need a Hand Pump with a Gauge attached to do it, because too much Air Pressure will blow-out the Fork Seals.

Since the amount of Air Pressure is so LOW ... you can live without adding any Pressure to the Forks like most of us do, anyway.

The "Dials" are for adjusting Pre-Load.
Adding a little more tension to the Fork Springs.
Experiment by changing the settings equal on both sides.
See where you like having them set.

What RickCoMatic said, is probably the best way.

If you have an owners manual, or can get one. Both the owners manual and the repair manual have guide lines for setting both front and rear shocks.
