Hello all!! Im brand new to this site and new to the XJ Yamaha. my buddy is giving me a bike he has had lying around for years. He said he thinks its a 650, but not a 100% sure. I know that it is chain driven not shaft. Did they make a chain driven 650? the build date is 10/81 and im pretty sure it has a YICS marking on the side of the motor. I havent been over there to see or pick it up yet. All the decals have been removed.
Thanks and i look forward to hanging around this site!

No. The chain-driven XJs were the original XJs, and started life as the Japanese home-market 398cc XJ400.

There was a (Seca-styled) XJ500 for other parts of the world; then the 550s which we got (Seca and Maxim.)

The 550s led to the XJ600 and FJ600, and that was it. I believe there WAS a 700cc Radian in the late '90s, which had the 550 Maxim frame and was chain driven.

The FJR1300 is chain driven but MamaYama won't bring them here.

oh and we get the XJR1300 and it's predecessor the XJR1200 here.
Apart from the handlebars being a bit narrow, they are great bikes.

    Sorry, XJR1300.

Yeah, and they get them in Australia and New Zealand too. Pretty much everywhere except the USA.
