I recently picked up an 89 FJ600. I REAALLLY like this bike. I have been looking around for an aftermarket exhaust but can't seem to find anything. is it possible to just drill out the baffles on my stock exhaust? anyone ever drill out the rivets in the end cap ans see what is inside? would i have to re-jet even with a small exhaust modification? sorry for all the questions, i am a newbie

i have the xj700n maxim. i drilled off the rivets on the exhaust end
caps. behind the cap is a back plate thats part of the muffler.

i just re-drilled where the five rivet holes were to 3/4" dia. each.

now i dont know what your pipes look like so this may not apply but....
the sound is pretty damn nice if you like a crotch rocket.

made my 700 sound like a very mean rat bike.(in a good way)

my bike looks "cruiser" so the sound is wrong and i'm still searching for the one that fits, but i hope this helps.

Theres a pic of my holes in my exhaust. Sounds ok. Louder definatly, but still not throaty enough. Sounds a little hollow with the holes. Try drillin three in a triangle formation. Maybe give a little meater sound.

yah. i looked at slkid 's exhaust.
thats how i started mine as well. 3 small holes then checking the sound.

i kept going untill i ran out of drill size and space for the holes. although i could go to 1"-1 1/8" if i wanted to.

the sound was definatly not good with smaller holes. only once all five were drilled on each pipe to the size they are now did the sound come out right.

be aware though. it may affect the performance a little. my throttle responce improved at some rpm ranges and flattened out a tiny bit in others. not so much "reducing" performance as "redistributing" it.

Welcome to the site, Wingnut !!

if your exhaust looks REALLY good, you may want to buy one from a boneyard to play with.

I'd be really careful with the standard system especially if it is in good condition. My bike has a UK made "Motad" system. This sounds good and meaty without being obtrusive. As I returned to biking after a break - things have changed a bit in the UK with aftermarket systems having to comply with sound level regs - or be stamped "Not for road use".

This system complies and is of good quality but they are not cheap - they can be shipped to the US but would be about $300.

As "Time" says - I'd get a secondhand system or swap the silencers rather than attack the standard ones.

P.S. Upload a pic so we can see what she looks like!
