Perhaps a better title might be "How to lift the front end off the ground to remove the wheel?"

Not only is the front tire starting to get a little dry rot, but I need to look at the speedometer parts down there, but can't see where to put the jack without removing the exhaust. If it has to be done it has to be done, but I'm hoping someone has found an easier way.

Ther's a number of ways to do it. Presuming you have a centre stand on the bike??

If you do then you can put a block of wood between the pipes and the jack.

Or a strap form the bars to the rafters of the shed if available.

Or just get SWMBO to sit on the rear of the seat while on the stand.;)

The front is not very heavy when on the centre stand so a jack under the pipes won't hurt it.

I use a 2x6 wood board. Put bike on center stand and wedge the board up underneath the frame brace above the front of the engine.
Make the board about 2 inches longer so the front end lifts up.

I have done as Goon stated, On center stand, & with a piece of 6x6 that I cut to fit perfectly under the exhaust collector.
As stated, the front does not weigh that much when on the center stand.

You can also use jack stands put under the front motor mounts - that's what I do.

I knew the first way I thought was too complex.

now to find a little free time to implement that.

There is a bar between the exhaust on the front of the engine that I throw an extended jack stand under, and it seems to work fine. Plus it's quick and easy to do ( with the bike on the center stand, lift the front end with one hand, place that jack stand with the other )

I thought I had a front-on photo of this, but this should give you the idea. BTW, I protected the pipes with a towel, but be careful not to run the bike hot with this in place.

Wardog - I just put a scrap of 2x4 under my down pipes and jacked against that - just make sure you don't lift it up off the centerstand.

I've got everything we need to change your tires, and enough extra wheel weights to balance a few hundred. Give me a yell when you select your new rubber and we'll have a tire changin' afternoon.

    Religion and politics I'll discuss.

Tires and oil are taboo topics!
