Yes, it's a Maxim 400. When you see duct tape, you know you are seeing quality. ;-)

 

Actually that is an XS400.... DOHC version (maxim and seca variety)
Not to be confused with the XS400 SOHC version (Heritage special variety)

And not to be confused with the XJ400... DOHC 4 cylinder version (available in only some small markets).

The XS400 DOHC is essentially a 2 cylinder version of the XJ engine design, which explains the similar look.

 

Yes, it is a maxim 400. It is the xS (2-cyl) 400 Maxim which was fairly common......along with the XS400 Special. The XS400 was made to look like either the Maxim line, or the Special line, depending on which bike you wanted. To top it off, there were different variations of the 'Special', too......

The xJ (4-cyl) 400 Maxim was a Japanese-market-only bike. A few of them have managed to make their way here, so we see them occasionally.

Then, for the sportier people..........there was the xS (again, 2-cy) 400 Seca. That one looked more like the Seca 750 (well......sort-of), but also looked like a miniature version of the xZ (2-cyl, V, water-cooled) 550 Vision. THAT bike was sort-of cross between the Virago, and half of a V-max.

Gotta love the crazy things Mamma Yamma did with the 400's.
