So it looks like my 1981 XJ650 LH has a crap out motor that needs a complete rebuilt. so my question is this, could i swap out the XJ650 for a XS650 engine? I know the XJ is a shaft drive and the Xs is a chain drive but are the frame the same except the swingarm? and could i change the swingarm off a xs650 to my XJ650 or maybe add a hardtail kit to it . Basically could i install an XS650 into my XJ650LH? let me know of any problems or if this could be done. thanks in advance.

Anything can de bone if you want to . I can see several problems you will face.
    1- the XS650 engine is a 2 cylinder and the XJ650 is a 4 cylinder
2- Shaft drive to chain drive
    3- electrical wiring and igniton
That's just the start. My suggestion is to search EBAY and find a good used XJ650 engine and buy it. I have seen them go for a couple of hundred bucks. Thats easier than trying to do all thos modifications.

The frames are completely different, to answer your first question.
