I have been looking around for a set of gold tank badges for an "82" xj650 maxim project.
I located a set on Mike's XS site, which were reasonably priced, but are advertised for
an xs650. the holes are 4" apart, same as the maxim tank and they look like they are
offset about the same. Are they interchangeable with the gold maxim tank badges ?
Do any of you guys Know ?

All of the XS badges I have seen are a lot thicker, are "boxier"and don't have the the sleek contour to the letters.

The holes don't line up, very close but won't work. I'm in the same boat, would love some new ones and there are nice chrome XS badges for a reasonable price but they don't fit.

I wonder if I could tweak the holes a little with a chain saw file and fill the ovaled out gaps with jb weld and touch up with black paint. Are the badges too
thick to conform to the tank ? If I can save a few bucks on each phase of this build I'll have a few bucks left for the next one. Are they so different that
anyone would notice ? Excepting ,of course, Hogfiddles, Kmoe, or Chacal ?

I never purchased one so I don't know. If you do and it works well, please post up your results. I picked up some decent used ones that need refinishing but am open to options.

maybe a little heat will help them conform to the tank if needed
do you have a junk one or piece of one to try to heat?

I can tell you what happens with the XJ letters but I can't tell you what happens with XSs letters.... With the XJ letters the webbing between the letters softens faster than the letters do, so the letters bold away from each other but don't curve Unless you try to warm up each individual letter. Even then, they don't curve smoothly to the tank. It's better than nothing, but only from several feet away.

I Have some XS letters at home, and if I get time in the next couple of days I will try to take a side-by-side picture for comparison

Makes a guy want to fill the indentations and the brackets with body filler and paint the tank and get some gold colored decals laser cut to replace the old tank badges. Better than nothing if you can't get someone to re-produce them I guess.

Thanks Dave, that really clears it up. That XJ badge is one of the best I've seen too!
