    Hi Guys,
I'm thinking about more serious modifications to be made on my bike (R1 front end, well tuned engine, etc.) and I'm collectiong information about the things I want to do. One of them is the rear brake. I do want to keep the shaft drive. I do want to keep the looks of the wheel. But I want to have disc brake at the rear. Seems like it's possible when I can borrow an XJ1000 rear wheel. So, the question for the experts: can I bolt the XJ1000 rear wheel onto the XJ750 swingarm?

The XJ1100 Maxim is made from XS-11 parts and is not a direct swap or "bolt-in".
But if you took all the parts to a machine shop, and a fat wallet, you might be able to sort out the mis-match.

You *want* the disc brake, correct? Pardon me but, my xj750 has a disk brake on the rear. Your's doesn't?

If that is the case, I would be happy to sell you: rear wheel (I believe that the rear tire is good so that you wouldn't even have to replace it) along with the brake components coming back from and including the brake pedal. My prices would not be steep. I generally charge about 20% less than the avg selling price on eBay plus actual shipping.

Doh! Drum brake ... never mind.

I have never seen a disc brake on the rear.

Why are bikes usually designed with disc on the front and drum on the rear? Cars too for that matter ...

The Elevens do have the single disc rear, but it's a weird setup. There's an extra bracket on the right that locks onto the swingarm and the axle that holds the caliper assembly... I wonder if it would be easier to adapt the whole swingarm from the XJ1100.

Also, driveshaft length may be an issue... Dunno for sure though.

Hey guys, is everyone forgetting about the XJ900? It has a disc rear brake and the swingarm will swap onto 650 and 750s.

ZsoltK--if you are planning on doing an R1 front end swap you need to do something completely different with the rear wheel. Mixing radials and bias tires doesnt work very well. Also the r1 has a 120 on the front I believe. Thats almost as wide as the rear tire. Combine that with the mismatched tires and you will have a bike that is downright scary in turns.

The shaft drive from a Goldwing is on the right side, and the right side is the wrong side !
The 900 swingarm is both longer(not a prob) and I've heard it's a tad wider. And since he doesn't want the 900 rim look, he's back to adapting an XJ1100 rim to a 900 swingarm- - not much gained.
The XS-11 swingarm swap including rear gears would put the engine out of it's RPM range--you would have to drive around in 3 rd gear.

here may even be an axle diameter difference?? A careful mechanic-machinist would measure everything, then maybe create the spline-hub adapter inside the rear rim- - custom. The rear axle may have to be turned down just on one end ??

The rest was covered in a post
    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... e+900.html
where a guy put a disc brake from a 900 on to a turbo 650.

    Hi Guys,
thanks for the answers, they are very useful! Looks like I do not have a real option to have a better brake at the rear.

On the R1 note. I'm not planning to use the R1 front wheel. It's the harder option, but I do like to keep the wheel from the XJ. This involves a lot of grinding and custom part making but that's the price :)
