I've never seen an XJ100, but I don't think any of the XJ series have kick starters!

"IIRC, the 79 had a removable kick-starter, and it's supposedly stored somewhere on the bike (if you're lucky).. 80-81 XS and the 82 XJ models had the kick starter hole plugged off with a plastic cap."

    anybody else?

From what I know, Yamaha stopped kickstarts in 1980 on the xs1100. I'm currently working a 1980 XS1100 and the kickstarter is clearly marked by a stamp on the transmission. the hole for the kick start is plugged by a metal plug.
I plan on putting only a kick start on this bike. I am breaking down the engine now and can post what I find when I take the transmission apart. I am assuming that I will need to insert the gears for a kickstart...we'll see

You can put a kick starter on any XJ1100 or XS1100. You just need the internal parts and kick starter from a 78 or 79 XS1100. Easy to install just have to remove the clutch cover .I put one on my XJ1100 just in case.

Hey, Frogs! I *really* like the scalloped finish on that XS/HD. I used to know a guy who had a beer fridge on his porch, one of those old rounded door ones. He did much the same thing with a grinder and I thought that looked pretty cool til I saw how good it looks on a bike! Maybe I'm gonna have to try something like that myself one day...

Thanks. The scallop was done with a brass wire wheel on a drill. The tank and fender were then taken to our buds at Protech who baked a clear powdercoat over top. It came out topnotch and looks even better in person...

You also have to get the internal shaft and remove the oil pan to install.
I bought all the stuff to do the conversion and will do it over the winter.
So far the bike runs so well I haven't bothered to install it yet.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm also interested in adding a kickstarter to my XJ1100... any updates on how it went and what all was required (parts list, steps)?

    Cheers,

    Trev

My Dad had a '78 XS-11 and the black (not chrome) kick starter mounted under the seat. The top box was in the way of opening the seat, and my Dad mused that it would be easier to just bump start the bike if needed.

That bike was so smooth and powerful. . .
