Hello, I put a post on the site a while ago about running/starting problems with my XJ1100. At last I have got to the bottom of the problem, it turned out to be electrical. Thanks to members I was able to test out all the various electrical items; some of which we don't see over here in the UK, information is also very hard to come by, plenty for the XS but little for the XJ.

First the battery seems to be OK, now that the engine fires up instantly. second I long ago replaced the ignition switch with a not-ever-so robust pattern, I included a relay to take the load of the switch, this relay was dropping 1v across its switch terminals. I have replaced the switch with a better one, I still use a relay but have re-sited it (not now in the headlamp shell) on the frame, easier to check/replace. I took all the connectors to bits and cleaned up all the terminals. With my new found information I was able to test the boost sensor, no good at all. I first bought an Ebay one from the US which turned out to be rubbish, it even had a vacuum leak, I then obtained a second hand one from a site member which tested out OK.

After this it still was not right, the coils tested for resistance OK but having gained an Ebay new pattern pair, I put these on, much better but still mis-firing so in desperation I put the old ignition unit back on and it ran a treat. I have no idea why this is, the replacement unit was brand new but causes problems. The, to me, ridiculously complicated safe start arrangement , with all its many switches and relays has never really worked, and I have never bothered about it too much, I just pull the clutch in and fold up the side stand by habit. It is now by-passed and so is not a problem. If I can find all the parts I may resurrect it, but new parts over here are just silly money.

I would like to thank everyone for all the help and advice, lots of good reading on the site. Ric.

Great that you solved problem. Just remember trouble shooting 101 , have a manual, wiring diagram , volt meter ...and check the little things , grounds ( earths in UK lol) , battery even if new might be problem. A weak starter can also add to problems. Such a great feeling when you solve a problem. As to coils I run 82 Honda CB 750 coils these mount just like stock in same location and have replaceable plug wires. Can still be bought new about 40$ from Cycle Recyle Part 2 .com is one that sells these and they sell the plug wires and caps as well. I don' t know what that translates to into pounds or euros ...sure you can find some at Dave Silvers spares in UK . Cheers
