I'm in the process of ratting out my xj1100. A few weeks ago I chopped off the exhaust under the bike just before the 4 pipes join into two. I was originally going to make a custom exhaust where each of the 4 pipes makes its way to the back of the bike individually like a 4 into 4 style. Now having measured stuff out I realize that I would be forced to bend some of the pipe to make it fit and I don't have access to a pipe bender.

So now I'm left with one of my other 2 options. Buy a 4 into 1 pipe which I really don't want to do because of cost issues (if someone here knows how I can get one for under $300 total cost+tax+shipping ect, let me know). My other option is to add four 1' pipes to the existing pipes and make a short exhaust. The tips I would angle down toward the ground. Now this seems like the simpler solution to me but how would I go about making some sort of baffle for each pipe, and is it even possible to quite down the engine in such a short amount of distance 1'? I'm not concerned about making it your typical stock exhaust quiet. Just somewhere in between "loud" and "piss the neighbors off loud" right in the middle would be good.

    thoughts, input, criticism are welcome.

Take it to a muffler shop and have them bend the pipes for you.

And remember the adage..."Measure twice, then cut once."

If you go with the very short exhaust idea, your only option to reduce the sound and increase the velocity of the exiting gases (aka keep your backpressure) is to use a very narrow tip.

    Good luck.

Also check your local wreckers for the 4-1 exhaust. I picked up a new (to my bike) front master cylinder and a 4-1 exhaust in pretty good shape for $150
