I know what you are thinking.

    Another thread about carbs.

My question is, I very much want pods, this is not because it will make my bike faster but purely for the aesthetics of my build.

Others have worked so hard tuning and changing their cv carbs, my thought is why bother? Just change them for non cv carbs and forget about the vacuum issue altogether?

Can i change my 4 carbs for something like these? I know it will need adjustment etc but surely less than a cv carb?

More trouble then it's worth in my opinion, and it would change the originality of the bike and reseal value and unless you are a very crafty person will most likely never get it to run like it suppose to.

and imagine trying to "tickle" 4 carbs to get it to start?

I'm not concerned about originality or resell value although I do respect that keeping it as yamaha intended is important to many.

If i fabricated the bits for the fueling and throttle so positioning. The rest is just jetting and adjustments?

Surely this has a better chance of success over the alternative ie pods on the cv carbs?

And since I'm adamant on doing this, knowing that it's work and won't be as good as the original airbox etc.

Suggestions on how I would go about it?

first check to make sure the frame rails are not going to interfere with the throttle pull on the 2 inner carbs.
the float bowls need to sit level.

You'll need to figure on making four carb cables be controlled by one throttle cable too. Not difficult, but it can be a bit fiddly to get them to all pull equally.

Make sure that the carb(s) meet the CFM requirements for the engine. Going too far out of spec in either direction will make jetting a nightmare and hamper performance.

I never knew this and I have the manual . EFI is a whole other kettle of fish, one that would require tons of outside help. I figure at least with carbs i can spend ages trying to sort it myself lol

Before I begin spending a ton, I noticed one or two had tried a single larger pod that sits in the space of the airbox?

Is that a viable option with current carbs?

so I was just chatting with someone on FB going through the pains of pods rejetting to move the flat spot ect. I suggested to him to make a liner for the pods to force air down from the end , he put the airbox boots inside the pods and got improvment as the boots acted like the velocity stack and just being covered with the pods for the look. he is going down a size in jets now that he has done that worth a try. (K&N oval single pods).

have also seen the 2 carb set up and 1 carb set up in FB land, any thing is possible if you put in the work.

we do have a few EFI members here who you may want to talk to about the setup.

That sounds great xj550h, I'll look into it for sure. I just don't want to give up and do the standard airbox. Even a single large filter in the triangle would look cool. Maybe efi is the way to go but how much space wiild that take up. And isn't it even more expensive and finicky with lots of necessary outside help??
