    Hello,

I hit a slight snag in working on my 1982 xj550 maxim. I bought a new set of oil and dust deals for the front forks. The oil seals look exactly like the ones that I took out, but the dust seals included were not a part that I took out when disassembling the forks... so now I have two dust seals, both of which fit individually, but which don't work together. Any ideas? The large rubber seals look better, but I think the ones that go in the tube will have a better seal.

Here is the shock before I installed the seals.

These are the dust boots that were on the shocks.

This is the dust seal that came with the oil seal. They seem to fit well.

This is with both seals. As you can see the outer one is not all the way on.

You can still get those Yamaha parts so why not go and get the proper ones?

So the larger ones are the correct seals for the fork? I just wanted to make sure that they were the right thing. The ones that came with the oil seals look likey they would do a better job keeping dust out, but maybe that is just because my old ones have seen better days.

I don't know because I don't have the part number to them. I don't know if you got the correct seals or not. Sounds like you didn't because the dust seals would fit if you did. Dust Seal part number for your bike is 3J2-23144-00-00.

It almost looks as though your "kit" provided both types of 550 dust seals.

The original dust seals on the 550 Maxim install on the outside of the top of the lower tube, as in the bottom pic.

The original dust seals for the 550 Seca install IN the top of the tube; but they don't have exposed tension spring rings like the ones you got.

I gotta go with OBD; get the correct parts.

    Thanks guys.

I guess I learned my lesson about buying parts off of ebay. I think I will stick with reputable places from now on.
