Mine disintegrated and I went online shopping for a new one; there is a specific part number for XJ550's according to the fiche, but vendors seem to indicate there is a universal switch for almost all Yamaha's from the 70's to about 2000. It's much cheaper and it looks correct, anyone have any input?

After looking at my options I am planning to install a new master cylinder, since it will come with a switch (ridiculously easy to rewire) and mine is due anyway because it is spongy. I'm looking at a 14mm bore, which is close to stock, but combined with the 38mm piston in the caliper it looks to provide an undesirable ratio. Judging by the chart here http://www.vintagebrake.com/mastercylinder.htm it appears that a 10 or 11mm bore would be more appropriate?
Also I want to do my lines, does anyone know the lengths off-hand?

-Your brakes aren't "spongy" because of the master cylinder, the 30-year old brake lines are all done, too.

-Caliper and master cylinder seals were only supposed to last two years, so they do need to be rebuilt. If you insist on replacing rather than rebuilding the M/C, XJ4Ever has both OE and aftermarket options as well as the rebuild kits. I wouldn't recommend guessing at substitute M/C specs.

-There is more to stainless lines than just length. Because they aren't as "forgiving" as rubber lines, the angle and "clocking" of the fittings at both ends is important if you want them to fit properly. Again, XJ4Ever is your best source.

-Regardless of which route you choose parts-wise, the entire brake system needs to be rebuilt, no shortcuts. Anything you don't do becomes a weak link in the system.
