i took off my cans so now the exhaust is just going through the collector box. i was thinking about taking out my air box and putting on pod filters. is it worth re-jetting if i do so?

my understanding is that any time you change the backpressure of the exhaust or open up the intake, you must re-jet to correct your air/fuel ratio. I'm not sure what Thrasher means by "Waste of Time." He either means that xj's have side draft carbs and they are not very responsive to mods and re-jetting is a "waste of time" because it's extremely hard to get it right, or that there are people who did exactly as you did and didn't need to re-jet making it a "waste of time."

In other words, re-jetting means many hours of trial and error and you are most likely going to have to try several different jets until you get it right. On the other hand, there are reports of people who are running straight pipes and pods that did not re-jet and are running just fine.

Bottom line is do a forum search. You will find that there is a formula that is more of a suggestion. You will find that people have spent the extra time and money and got it right. You will find that people have spent the extra time and money and ended up putting their mufflers and air boxes back in. Be prepared to spend the extra time and money if you decide to try and get it right.

FWIW I went from a stock exhaust to a 4 into 1 Gemini pipe on my XJ550 way back when, and I never had to re-jet at all - it always ran fine through the whole RPM range (although, I did not change the air box to pods).

dynojet offers a kit that come with stage 1 and 3 with specific instructions on your application all the way down to the groove on the needle and enrichment screw specs. but if i can run with out jetting that saves me $100!!

btw, how does it sound going just through the collectors? my mufflers are an eyesore and I removed them but have not reinstalled my carbs & air cleaner. basically, I'm deciding between leaving 'em off or adding sportster mufflers...

with no mufflers and just the collector box its LOUD. i dig the tone, but its waaaaayyyy too loud to use for daily driving. a ride longer than 10-15 minutes had my ears ringing

crapmunchers you can get sets of 4 jets from either like bikebandit dennis kirk or your local yamaha dealer i know ive seen them on DK for $10 a set of 4 they aren't that spendy. The Dyno jet kits is for performaces or something like that just get regular jets lol.

Go with the sportster mufflers. With nothing, the bike sounds like the neighborers station wagon that lost its exhaust. Plus they look way better then the megaphones. Put a slight bend int he fitting to bring them down in the back and you will have a real sweet look.
