xj550 maxim starter clutch

I recently was gifted a 82 550 maxim that I bought new in 82 and I sold in 84. The buyer was recently cleaning out their storage unit where it has sat since 99 and gave it to me.
I rebuilt the carbs and changed the fluids. It started without much fuss and as I was tuning the carbs, after a few restarts it sounds like the running engine was turning over the starter. I shut it down and started looking deeper into the manual.
Sounds like a starter clutch stuck in the engaged position. I am hoping someone here can confirm my diagnosis. Am I right? Manual is very sparse on starter clutch issues.
My second question, can it be unstuck without splitting the cases and pulling/replacing the associated parts.
