Probably a dumb question, but I'm doing a quick and easy paint job on my wheels and I plan on hitting them with a wire brush, washing them really good, and then spraying with some low gloss black paint. My question is, the exposed aluminum portions of the wheel, are they coated with anything? I would like to polish them up and tape them off but I don't want to get too aggressive if they are supposed to have any kind of protective coating.

On my GS1100 wheels which are similar to the XJ550 wheels I cleaned them up really good and used a product called Back to Black
    https://www.amazon.com/Mothers-0611...ocphy=9029625&hvtargid=pla-384338208170&psc=1

I then polished the exposed areas with 0000 steel wool. Turned out good. I was surprised how well the black areas turned. It would be a good idea to polish the aluminum areas first then The mothers product.

So I ended up using a wheel and tire cleaner solution and a soft bristle brush and cleaned them up as good as I could. It's not perfect but they are much much better than before. Thank you for the suggestion!
