Hey I'm new her eto this site, I posted this in the general section but no one replyed. can someone help me with an electrical problem?

my xj550 ran great all sumer, now that it's cool it will not fire any of the plugs. The engine turns great and the carbs are good, I even tried started fluid like Ether. I took out each plug and all four will not fire, I tested the coils and Ignitor with a mete and they seem good. Any ideas?

It could be a number of things. The bike has a "safety circuit" consisting of the sidestand switch, sidestand relay, clutch lever switch, neutral switch and the safety relay itself. A problem with any of those could cause your issue. (Quick and easy troubleshoot is to unplug the safety relay.)

Fusebox. You could have a cracked IGN fuse clip and never see it until you touch it and it falls apart.

Weak battery. It IS possible (I've experienced it myself and more than once) for the battery to have enough power to spin the motor quite vigorously but not have enough left to actually FIRE THE PLUGS. Never saw anything like it before but both of my XJs have done it to me, and more than once.

I would: Fully charge the battery, fit a NEW set of properly-gapped plugs, set the petcock to PRI for about 30 seconds and with full "choke" (enrichment) try again. After double checking the fusebox but before disconnecting the safety relay.

yeah I had a few of these problems in the passed, I have the kickstand switch bypassed, I replace the clutch lever switch and tested it this weekend. I know the neutral switch is good I tested that, I also have a new battery and it is fully charged. I think it may be a good idea to test or check this safety relay as you said, i did not think of that. Unfortunately my fuse box no long exists, it was replaced with inline fuses many years before I got the bike, however I did check each fuse. do you think it could possibly be a bad Ignitor as well?
