    Hello All,

well as I work through my cafe project I have come up with another spoked wheel option for the xj550.

For the front I borrowed an idea from here and have an sr 125 front wheel, which is about to be laced up to a dt125 rear 18" rim.

On the rear I have an sr250 rear wheel, which with sr spacers, fits perfectly without needing different spacers machining and is centred and the sprocket lines up. This is being laced up to an xt600 18" rim.

All I need to do now is work out what sprockets and chain I get to fit. Ideas?

    I'll post pics later.

Does the SR250 rear wheel include a "cush drive" of some sort?

The XT/TT500 rear wheel does have dampers, AND... a 45T rear sprocket was one of the originally available sizes on those bikes. When I was originally considering this mod, I was going to use that wheel.

If you pick the right parts, you should be able to keep the original sprocket and chain sizes.

Yes it has a cush drive. I can't find xt500 wheels at a decent price and I couldn't make the xt600 work with out lots of mods so I opeted to try this.

    From the top.

The oily housing there has the cush rubbers inside.

This is the rim freshly cut from the xt600 hub. Going to be cleaned up and powder coated before I get it all laced up.

Still working on the front but will post pics soon.

Just thought anyone thinking about spokes might be interested.

Since we're on the subject -
    I have an XT500 (1978) that needs a complete rear rim/hub/brake.

If I stay with the same axle size, can I just pick anything (within reason) with a "cush" drive hub??

For example, can my search venture away from Yamaha??

When I do my spoked wheels I intend to ditch the stock 530 pitch chain and drop to a 520 chain, they're lighter, cheaper and easily strong enough for the HP the 550 puts out

Is the SR125 front wheel able to take twin discs?

the sr 125 front is single disk only. I looked at twin disk options and the yam xtz tenere has them as does honda transalp. I'm shamelessly copying col66's setup for the front his looks brilliant. A big aprilia rs125 disc with a 4 pot caliper.

I looked at sprockets and the sr250 520 pitch setup will work. The front sprocket will fit straight on. So it'll be lighter too.

    an update-

scrapped the sr125 front wheel in favour of a tdr250 wheel. The tdr wheel drops straight in and xj speedo drive fits. It also has a nice alloy rim. Waiting for a disc to see what alterations need to be made.

The rear is with the wheel builder and should be back this week.
