Okay, I know of at least one person that is going to not agree with me on this but I have sync'ed my carbs on my xj550 so many times that I have lost count.... I have done the sync with the YICS tool and then turned right around and checked the sync without it and it is the exact same either way. By the book, yes, you should use it but from first hand experience I say it is not really needed. When I check the sync of my bike anymore I tend not to use the tool. After all, when the bike is going down the road you don't have a YICS tool in the motor so why would you sync the motor when a tool is in there? Just food for thought....

Heh. :) This has been discussed to death time and again. A forum search will explain the reasoning behind the need for the YICS tool, or someone else can explain it better than I.

I still don't fully understand why I need the YICS tool when syncing, but after much research & reading arguments one way or the other I've come to the conclusion that I NEED to use the YICS tool because Yamaha say so & that's just the way it is, so I use it. It doesn't take a minute to pop the bolt out & the tool in anyway, so I might as well do as I'm told by "the book" ;) :)
