I have an '83 XJ550K Maxim. When I "bounce" on the seat, there is an annoying squeak.
I've lubed the bushings on the rear shock mounts, tried WD40 on just about every bushing or pivot I can see.
I'm having trouble locating the exact source, but sounds like it comes from around the pivot arms on the rear wheel/center stand area. I can't be sure of this location however.

Any ideas what the cause is? Anyone else have this problem?

Overall the bike is in very good shape, no rust, etc.

When you got the bike did you check the swingarm bearings for play? At the very least they will need to be cleaned and repacked with new grease.

By swing arm do you mean the arm the rear wheel is mounted to?

I've had the bike since brand new and no they have not been repacked.

I suspect they might be the squeak?

Yes, I mean the arm that the rear wheel attaches to. I strongly suspect that is where the squeak is coming from. The swingarm beaings need attention occasionaly, and yours are several years past due. I will go so far as to suggest that they are in need of replacement.

Swing arm bearings is the first thing that comes to mind for me too. When you sit/ bounce on the bike, the only things that really move are:

Shock mounts ( you addressed.... Did you lube both upper AND lower pivots?)

    The swing arm bearings

The wheels can rotate a teeny bit-- which could cause squeak in dry wheel bearings, as well as worn brake shoes could possibly squeak

Wheel bearings are repacked and fine
    Brake shoes brand new
    Lubed all shock mounts
I guess all that is left is the swing arm bearings.
