I have seen oil temperature guages for the Suzuki GS series bikes which are very similar to ours. The unit replaces the standard oil fill hole plug and has a small "meat" temperature gauge mounted in it. That is really the only factor that can determine if an engine is overheating since the oil does most of the cooling. Generally, the oil temperature should not exceed 240 degrees F IIRC and anything above about 200 degrees is detrimental to mineral (dinosoar) oils and 240 is the upper limit for synthetic oils. Detrimental meaning it shortens the oil's useful life.
