Hi. I have some issues with my xj and would like to know if this is "normal".

First of all there is click-click sound coming from a top of first cyl. Valve clearance is checked and is ok. compression is checked and is within normal range. clicking sound rate gets faster with more rpm.

Shifting from first to second gear is a rough job. all other up-shifts and down-shifts are nice and smooth.

After a month in a garage it takes about 10min and few bangs from exhaust for all cyl to start running. When engine gets warm it works just fine.

    Tnx

every bike i've ever had with a rough shift is usually the result of having regular automotive oil in it instead of synthetic oil.

last year i had a 94 ninja 600 that not only shifted rough, it wouldn't go into neutral unless i was rolling, and also knocked at idle.

motorcycles don't like regular automotive parts. motorcycle synthetic oil is expensive, but makes a BIG difference.

-some valve train noise is normal; you may also be hearing a minor exhaust leak at the head. These often sound very "metallic" and make you think there is a mechanical problem.

-your clutch cable probably needs to be lubed and adjusted; possibly replaced. If the clutch is dragging you will experience what appear to be "transmission" problems.

Please put relevant bike info into your signature and a basic location in your profile so we don't have to keep asking questions, like:

How many miles on the bike?

I've put new original clutch cable and adjusted it by the book. shifting gears up and down is smooth except 1to2. Sometimes even that change is not rough. Just wanted to know is that normal.

    what about:
"After a month in a garage it takes about 10min and few bangs from exhaust for all cyl to start running. When engine gets warm it works just fine."
Is that normal for bike with more than 30000km ???

If you're not using fuel stabilizer it's a wonder it'll start at all after sitting a month.

While sitting, some (all perhaps in a month) fuel will evaporate from the carburetors. Try setting the fuel valve on "PRI" for 30-60 seconds after the next long rest and see if it starts easier. My XJ650 was very hard to start in just a week if I didn't put it on prime for a minute.

    What your expriencing sounds normal.
Most of the bikes I've owned shift better 2-5 then 1-2.
In most cases it's just an effect of passing nuetral and theres
a bit of clunk-at leased sometimes-..
I always use the clutch to shift from 1-2. after that, I just slip
    them in as I go.
Some xj's are rough starting to begin with. I've read many tales
of starting woe's. Although I've been very lucky and she starts on
the first try no matter the time of year, temp, time down.
Try Micarls idea and see if it go's away.

my bike 94 xj600 seca 2 does this as well- from 1st to second is a real good "clunk" - seems to be normal though, my girlfriends ninja 500 does something similar.

as far as starting- no problems so far (only had the bike for about a week though)... i think that if you use the choke and remember that giving it throttle to start off is only going to counter act the choke being on- youll be fine.

Im trying to find out if the ticking sound is normal- valves were supposedly adjusted @ 10k miles (now at 15k) but there is definitely a tick.

problem is that click-click comes only from first cyl.

head was dismantled an rebuild. valves adjusted, carbs synchronized.
    and still click-clikc-clikc-click

Sound gets louder with engine temperature rising.

My "tick" seems to come from #4 more or less. although the whole
    frickin motor is noisy.
And you should hear some ticking from the top since that means
the valves are not to tight.
But for your own piece of mind, pull the valve cover
and inspect for loose parts and check clearences again.
If all is well and you have no performance issues then let it
    go.
I constantly here a new mysterious noise as I'm riding along.
99% of the time it's one thats always been there and the only
reason I hear now is because I stopped worrring about the last
little noise that bugged me.

valve clearance is double checked, no lose parts, bike runs great.
    but!
could it be that oil pressure is to low. and when it gets hot lubrication of upper part of engine is not good enough???

i can forget it but just want to be sure that it will not kill the engine.
