Not sure why no one has responded to this yet... ! Should be posted in the XJ Chat section, however.

I'm not 100% familiar with the pre-Diversion/Seca XJ600's -- does it have the choke located on the left side of the carbs (with off/half/full positions), or is it the cable pull choke up on the handle bars?

I can't get a diagram of your bike pulled up right now to see which type of choke it is.

The three position choke on the Diversion/Seca XJ600's is a little weird. I actually don't care for it at all. Since you can't adjust it finely as the bike is warming up, there will be times where it idles high until the bike is warmed up enough to run with it off.

However, if you've got the fully adjustable choke on the handlebars and it idles too high no matter where you put the choke, you might need to dissect your carbs. You could have excess fuel leaking into the intake. Getting your carbs cleaned, sealed, and adjusted properly will address any irregular idle issues, choke or no choke.

That doesn't sound too high to me. The choke is the "Knob" type mounted on the L/H side of the carbs. I used to start my 600 having to hold the choke out as it slipped in. By the time I had ridden 800 metres I didn't need the choke anyway.
